Martial Arts Styles
Stav
Stav is a Nordic martial art, maintained and developed for over 44 generations by the Norwegian Hafskjold family. Based on an oral tradition and centering around 16 runes, Stav is a European tradition that improves the mind, body and spirit.
Stav is based around the use of a staff, which is used to teach combat principles in general. The staff and body are used to form the positions of 16 runes, creating a combination of combat and philosophy that is inseparable. These 16 stances help exercise the body gently, creating flexibility without pressure, and can be modified to compensate for injury or illness. In addition, the breathing exercises help promote complete breathing. Regular practice of Stav can increase flexibility, improve body posture, and improve muscle condition. Students are taught cuts, thrusts and guards with the staff through the use of the 16 runic postures and stances.
