Tyra Banks features Krav Maga instructor on the episode
“60 Seconds to Save Your Life”
International supermodel and television talk show host Tyra Banks assembled a team of survival and self-defense experts to teach young women how to protect themselves if they are ever in mortal danger. They focused on the critical seconds following a violent attack and how awareness and keeping your head can make the difference between life and death. Tyra set up Toccara from "America's Next Top Model" in a phony but terrifying parking lot ambush to demonstrate what easy prey most unprepared women are to attackers.
After she experienced the surprise attack in a deserted parking lot, Tocarra said the hardest thing was that the assailant kept coming after her. She tried to run but he would still be right next to her. She didn't fight back. She screamed for assistance but felt the situation became hopeless. To help educate young women on the options they have for defense, Tyra welcomed Marcus Kowal, a martial arts expert from the Krav Maga National Training Center in Los Angeles. Marcus offered these tips for women to avoid an attack:
- Assess your situation and know your surroundings.
- Walk with confidence, with keys or a pen in your hand.
- When attacked, scream and be aggressive.
- Don't try to wrestle with your attacker. Try to hit or kick vulnerable areas (knees, groin, face, feet).
- If attackers ask for a valuable item, give it to them. There is a 90 percent chance of survival if you give them what they ask for.
