Aikido

Aikido, the "art of peace," is a Japanese martial art that focuses not on punching or kicking your opponent, but on using the momentum and energy of your opponent to gain control over him and throw him away from you.

Morihei Ueshiba, referred to as O-Sensei ("The Great Teacher"), founded Aikido. Ueshiba was against all forms of war, believing that continued fighting and conflict would destroy Earth.

Aikido does use various striking blows, but that is not what the essence of Aikido is about. There are no Aikido techniques that are intended to strike an opponent as a primary attack. Aikido is about using the energy of your opponent against him. There are many Aikido defensive maneuvers against opponents' kicks and punches.

Aikido is an art that is practiced by the peaceful. It is used to get in touch with the harmony of Heaven and Earth. It is generally practiced with a partner, with one partner executing throws and the other person allowing himself to be thrown. Aikido is a comprehensive system of throwing, joint-locking, striking and pinning techniques. Aikido students can also train in traditional Japanese weapons, such as the sword, staff and knife.

Action film star Steven Seagal is known for practicing the art of Aikido, though many contend that the martial arts he uses in his films is not true Aikido but just a form of it. Seagal has run dojos in the United States and Japan.

There are many Aikido schools that allow students to learn Aikido moves and the essence of the martial art.
